This is the one where Jon finds a new feature in an old camera.
A couple weeks ago, I was traveling at night and there was this amazing sky above me. I had to take a picture of it. Sadly, my new camera wasn’t there with me. I only had my ol’ Sony DSC-p7. Because it was dark, and there is no way the flash would help and it didn’t have shutter priority I thought that taking the shot was impossible. Boy was I wrong (about it not having shutter priority, the actual picture of the sky didn’t turn out very well).
After shuffling through the camera’s menus system I found a mode which I never used before. It was called “SCN” I have no idea what that stands for but in it, there is a “night mode” which you can manipulate to get a kind of “shutter priority”mode.
So how is this done? All I had to do was switch to this night mode; cover the lens with my hand or anything to trick the camera into thinking that the situation was dark. Then press the “shoot button” half way so that the camera sets its settings. Uncover the lens, and shoot away. The camera should be shooting in a slower shutter speed depending on how much you covered the lens.
In 5 easy bullet points
- switch to night mode.
- cover the lens.
- press the “shoot button” halfway.
- uncover the lens.
- shoot.
Good luck and have fun!
